That range is wide because a solar geyser price tag covers several different decisions at once: tank size, collector type (flat plate or evacuated tube), pressure rating, brand, and whether you're buying the unit alone or the full supply-and-install package. Cashbuild's cheaper units are usually B-grade or refurbished stock from brands like Kwikot, Supahot and Supasolar. They can be a fair deal if the unit is SABS-approved and carries a real warranty, but always ask the store to confirm both before you buy. A unit under R4,500 with no visible SABS mark is usually an unbranded import without local warranty backup.
Builders Warehouse stocks a strong range of SABS-approved Apollo Solar Technology geysers, and generally runs 5 to 15 percent above Makro on equivalent specs. Where Builders wins is brand selection, since it also carries Kwikot, which Makro's own-brand SolarFirst range does not include.

Tax deductions and rebates: what's real in 2026
This is one of the most common misunderstandings I see in reader questions, so it's worth being precise. Section 12B of the Income Tax Act lets businesses deduct the cost of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems used to generate electricity for trade. It has never covered thermal solar water heaters, including solar geysers, because the legal definition requires the asset to produce electrical power.
The individual residential rebate that ran from March 2023 to February 2024 was also PV-only: a 25 percent tax credit on new solar panels, capped at R15,000, and it excluded inverters, batteries, installation labour, and solar geysers entirely. That rebate has not been renewed and is not available in the 2026 tax year.
What this means practically: budget for a solar geyser purely on its electricity-saving merits, not on an expected tax benefit. If you run a business from a property, such as a guesthouse, a solar geyser used in the production of income may sometimes be deductible under general wear-and-tear provisions, but this is a question for a registered tax practitioner, not a rule of thumb.
